MAP UI

Our underlying data is sourced from a variety of companies. Meniscus uses MAP (Meniscus Analytics Platform) to join these data sources together and to understand how they impact with other assets and to deliver short term predictions.

Radar rainfall
Updated every 5 minutes at 1km2 cell resolution. Source a leading independent weather forecasting company who in turn receives it from the Met Office.
Forecast rainfall
36 hours ahead at 1km2 cell resolution. Updated every 6 hours at 1 hour time intervals. Source a leading independent weather forecasting company.
Rain Gauges
These provide 15 minute data from the network of over 800 rain gauges in England managed by the Environment Agency. Data is updated at least daily and more often in heavy rainfall.
FEH99 Return Period

Customer specific information
This can include any datasource that companies are interested in relating to rainfall and weather data in general. Examples include: Shape files of polygons/areas of interest; Points of interest; Physical assets and their associated telemetry data (pumping stations, sewer levels, combined sewer overflows and much more).

Accuracy
Attrubuting accuracy to rainfall and especially forecast data is exceptionally hard since the perception of accuracy changes from user to user (i.e. average error vs how often prediction meets reality and how to compare the prediction vs actual readings).
In delivering MAP RainUK, Meniscus has developed a range of tools to enable us to compare actual and predicted accuracy and importantly to go back in time and re-run forecast events on an ad-hoc basis. This allows us to compare the forecasts at 6,12,18 and 24 hour intervals against the actual rainfall and we monitor the accuracy of our Hyperlocal rainfall predictions across the whole UK – currently running at 82% for the last year.
We are undertaking a complex project to provide a ground truth dataset for the historic rainfall data in England. This uses the Environment Agency rain gauge data to adjust the radar data within a specific region around the rain gauge.

Limit of Liability
Meniscus is not a weather forecasting company but a data analytics company that specialises in processing very large datasets and delivering analytics at scale and at speed. We process raw data sourced from third parties and as such we take no responsibility for the quality of this raw data. We endeavour to ensure that all subsequent metrics and calculations that use this data are correct and have a range of complex processes in place to monitor and compare these datasets.

EA Rain Gauges This uses Environment Agency rainfall data from the real-time data API (Beta) provided under the Open Government Licence

7 Day Forecast
Generates a CSV and a PDF file for the forecast for the next 7 days. Data is shown for Cambridge, Colchester, Lincoln, Northampton and Norwich. Please note - For the first 3 days of the forecast, the value at 06:00 includes values from 00:00 to 06:00. For the last 4 days the value at 06:00 includes values from 18:00 the previous day to 06:00. This is a snapshot of the forecast taken at 06:00 each day.

Animation on/off
Displays the forecast rainfall at 1 hour timesteps. Available for the next 6 hours or the next 24 hours. If the animation is left on then the display replays from the current time.

Show rainfall at any selected point in time

Show Alerts
Display the Current Show Alerts
. Shows Red, Amber and Green (RAG) alerts for flooding areas. The RAG limits are different for each area. To adjust the limits please contact the Anglian Water Data Science team or Meniscus. To see more detail about the flooding alert click the alert
